The area that is now Woodmore began its legacy in 1698, after Thomas Spriggs acquired 500 acres of what was then known as the forest of Prince George's County in the Crown Colony of Maryland. Kept in the family for several years, they later sold to the Bowie family. The Bowies, in turn, sold the property to the Walkers who ran a lumber business in Washington D.C., serving as the area’s first commuters. Slated for a grand opening in fall of 2008 is the Woodmore Towne Center. The Towne Center will include a variety of stores such as 140,000 square foot Wegmans grocery store, 700,000 square feet of retail shops, over 900 housing units, a conference center and two hotels. The Woodmore Towne Center will be located in Prince George’s County in Landover at the I-495 and Route 202 just north of the Largo Town Center, FedEx Field and Inglewood Business Park.
Cultural and entertainment events and destinations from nearby Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. offer diverse options for Woodmore residents. Baltimore boasts over 100 annual community festivals, concerts, and events, while famous museums such as the Baltimore Aquarium and the Maryland Science Center top the list of places to visit. Rich in historical relevance, Washington, D.C. is only a short drive from Woodmore and Mitchellville. Presenting monument tours, museum trips, libraries and countless educational expeditions, the nation’s capital city sits on the picturesque Potomac River. An active populace, residents utilize the many parks and thoroughfares for exercise and recreation. Annapolis is a place where maritime heritage in a quaint seaport village provides a wealth of educational and recreational opportunities. Spend a day sailing the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in North America on a breathtaking yacht, or kayak the many creeks feeding the Bay. The laid-back style and awe inspiring scenery is the backdrop as you dine on the fresh seafood fare of the Chesapeake Bay.
